She now comforts herself by cuddling his pillow at night,” she said. On Friday the shed was being pulled down because of memories it brought back for the family. “I just want it gone,” Mrs Roberts said. She said without the love and support from her family and the surrounding community things would be looking much worse. “I have to give a huge amount of thanks to the emergency services, the doctors, the local kindergarten and my neighbours who have helped out. It makes it a little easier,” she said.

By Andrew King DANIEL ROBERTS owes his life to his best mate who threw himself on top of him to smother the flames he had been engulfed by. Mr Roberts, of Ilam, suffered horrendous burns to his hands, face and body after a butane container was ignited by a nearby heater and exploded on June 7 at about 10pm. He has been in an induced coma in Christchurch Hospital for the last 10 days and had to undergo an eight-hour surgery on Friday to graft skin onto his hands and part of his back. His wife Nadia Roberts said if it had not been for his best mate, James, he would have died. “He just saw his best friend screaming in pain so he jumped on top of him and tried to put the flames out. He didn’t even think about his own safety, he just tried to save his mate,” Mrs Roberts said. James also suffered burns to his hands but it was Mr Roberts who took most of the blast. She has labelled him a hero,

News Water quality concern – residents By Georgia O’Connor-Harding RESIDENTS NEAR the proposed area where quarries want to dig deeper have told hearing commissioners their water has already been compromised. The quarry hearing for the Canterbury Aggregates Producer Group’s Resource consent began last week with 138 people asking to be heard at the hearing. CPAG, a group of quarry owners, want to be allowed to dig deeper than the current threshold of 1m above highest recorded groundwater levels. The 10 quarries cluster together at McLean’s Island, Miners Rd and Selwyn Rd. Yaldhurst Resident Association member Wayne Tewnion and RiccartonWigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora both attended the hearing. Mr Mora said residents near the quarries told the hearing commissioners Sharon McGarry, David Mountfort and Hugh Thorpe they have to drink bottled water. “When we hear the stories of the suffering people have been

Ngai Tahu, the city council, Environment Canterbury and the Canterbury District Health Board are some of the many organisations opposing the application. More than 600 submissions were made in relation to the joint application by Canterbury Aggregate Producers Group.

“If we don’t win it, it will be a very sad day,” Mr Mora said. Along with several other members from the Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association, biologist Dr Graham David Fenwick made a submission opposing the quarry owners proposed activities to quarry deeper. Dr Fenwick presented preliminary research showing the potential affects proposed

quarry deepening could have on groundwater water quality, biodiversity, ecology and ecosystem services. He said his evidence was preliminary because there was almost no research on how biodiversity and aquifer ecology could be affected by the deepening of quarrying. Dr Fenwick said The Christchurch Groundwater Protection Zone has “very thin soils” and “highly porous underlying gravels” making the underlying water that supplies the city very vulnerable to landuse activities. He said if the proposed activities proceeds, stringent monitoring of water quality and stgofauna is essential to sustain the services delivered by groundwater ecosystems to the city. “Because of the substantial uncertainties over . . . combined potential adverse effects . . . I consider the deepening of quarrying activities below the highest recorded groundwater level, as proposed, seems inappropriate,” he said. The hearing continues this week, with the quarries making their case.

In Brief BIN STOCKTAKE Kerbside wheelie bins throughout the city will be fitted with radio frequency tags as part of a stocktake starting next month. The stocktake is designed to save $9.3 million on the cost of the bin collection service over the next 13 years by removing lost, damaged and stolen bins from circulation. The radio frequency tag to ensures bins that are damaged, stolen or found on other properties can be easily identified. They can then be checked and matched to the database, returned to their original property or reallocated for future distribution. JELLIE PARK MANAGEMENT PLAN A presentation will be made to the city council on the proposed changes to the Jellie Park Management Plan. The current management plan was approved by the city council following public comment in 2010. The changes of the plan is in relation to providing a recreation and sports centre on the terrace as an aquatic facility offering indoor and outdoor features as set down in the city council’s aquatic facilities plan (2006).

Email your views to georgia. oconnor@starmedia.kiwi Halswell has long been a very safe community with low levels of crime. Recently there has been a significant spike in crime, probably due the actions of a very small number of people, and for most of us this this is very unsettling. It is good to remember that much of the crime is petty in nature. However, it is important to remember to lock cars and homes, to remove valuables from cars, and generally to be security conscious. It is also good to make the effort to report any crime to the police. Even if they can’t do much straight away, they may be able to see patterns in what is going on which may help at a later date. It helps to remember that we all actually still live in a community of pretty trustworthy people who care about their neighbours. There are regular discussions on Facebook

and neighbourly where we see people actively helping each other out and thanking others for help. There are a range of things that we can do as a community to discourage crime. Setting up neighbourhood support groups, getting to know our neighbours, knowing what is going on in our community and knowing about groups that work to protect us are all useful. Lodge boss ‘dumbfounded’

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE MANAGING director of a retirement home has been left “dumbfounded” after a request to make it easier for vehicles to access the facility was turned down. Last week, the RiccartonWigram Community Board unanimously voted against Kauri Lodge’s request to change the planned traffic island on Riccarton Rd, which is a part of bus priority scheme layout. The lodge wanted to change the layout so a raised median strip outside the eastern entrance of the property would be smaller. This meant vehicles could still turn into the lodge. It said relying on the western entrance only, which fell in the middle of the intersection of Matipo St and Riccarton Rd, was too dangerous. But the community board refused. Managing director Hamish Bennett said it was unfair to the lodge. “Our argument is logical, the experts have looked at it and are as dumbfounded as we are,” Mr Bennett said. He said to restrict access to the lodge would mean

increased risk of an accident when a person tries to make a U-turn further down the road. This could have a major financial impact on the company and increased response times for emergency services. Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck, who was against Kauri Lodge’s proposal,

Mobile library for community centre By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A MOBILE library has been agreed to as part of the Riccarton Community Centre after concerns were raised by residents in the central Riccarton area. The decision comes after first draft confirmed a library would not be included in the plans. It is planned the mobile library will visit the centre once a week. Last week, feedback from the public was made to the RiccartonWigram Community Board on the community centre’s concept design. Deputations were made from the Central Riccarton Residents’ Association and the Christchurch Photographic Society. Community Board chairwoman Helen Broughton said the board is also committed to having a council service desk, more storage and a commercial kitchen. She said the design is also capable of having a second storey. The Western News learnt construction is a year away and the facility is not expected to open until June 2018. Ms Broughton said the land of the current Riccarton Community Centre will be sold with proceeds going towards the funding of the new centre. “Owners will need to demolish the building,” she said.

Community worker Dr Husaini Hafiz said that the city’s 3250 Muslims did not suffer from the same levels of Islamophobia experienced by Muslims in Europe and the United States, but racial and religious prejudices can exist everywhere. Dr Hafiz said the Canterbury Muslim Community Trust is building cultural and religious bridges by reaching out to the city’s Muslims and the wider non-Muslim community. “We would like to ensure that Christchurch remains a good place to live for all, which means taking steps to foster better understanding between different groups,” he said. Dr Hafiz said many people assumed that the Muslim community in Christchurch was homogenous with the same cultural practices and religious beliefs. He said, in reality, the Muslim community in Christch-

ing to exercise it. ICWNZ volunteer Nada Tawfeek said the outreach programme was useful to bring about more open-minded views of Muslim women. “Some people were surprised to hear a girl in hijab speak with a British accent,” she said. Dr Hafiz said focus groups run in Canterbury had

identified three common concerns amongst Muslims in Christchurch: leadership, communication and lack of Islamic knowledge. One of the trust’s goals was to address the need for stronger communication channels between Muslims and non-Muslim communities. Last July, the trust invited students from New Zealand Broadcasting School to join in the breaking of fast at the AlNoor mosque in Christchurch. The invitation was a followup to an earlier educational session where the students were introduced to basic concepts of Islam and the impact of the media on Muslims. This year a similar educational session was offered to student journalists at the University of Canterbury and Ara Institute of Canterbury. Office of Ethnic Communities’ general manager, Maarten Quivooy, said organisations such as the Canterbury Muslim Trust play a “vital role” in educating and supporting New Zealanders to embrace and celebrate the benefits that diversity brings to us all.”

Last month, when dog Luke was hit by a car, it was Upper Riccarton resident Teresa Nesbit who gave up her duvet before carrying the dog to its owner’s car. Immediately after being hit the dog was found by his owner surrounded by concerned young people. “I was so blown away by the kindness of the young people and their looking after both of us with tenderness, was very caring,” she said. Sadly, soon afterwards, the old but active dog was put down. For about three weeks after the accident, owner Philippa Graham (also known as Luke’s mother) had been searching for the “kind lady” in a bid to return the duvet and thank her. Following the Western News article, Mrs Graham was contacted by Miss Nesbit to say she was the lady with the duvet. The duvet has now been returned to its rightful owner.

Top-notch tucker By Tom Doudney TWO Christchurch Girls’ High School students had the luxury of knowing they would win a regional cooking competition even before competing. Year 13 students Bridget James and Emily Perkins were the only entrants in the Canterbury section of the National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge, held at Ara Institute of Canterbury last week. This meant they only had to show up to gain entry to the national final in Auckland on August 30. The competition was meant to involve several teams of year 12 or 13 culinary students going headto-head in a live kitchen cook-off to produce four portions of entrée and main meals in 90min. Instead the girls were effectively able to use it as a practice run for the national final and a chance to hear judges’ feedback. James said the pair had been happy with how they went. “No other teams were around to stress us out, but I think we did pretty well.” Regional head judge Glenn Fulcher said it was very unusual to only have one team in a regional final. “We probably get on average

Former Shortland Street actor Vicki Edwards-Brown started the charity Be The Change in 2011 to tackle the problem of bullying and help support victims. She spoke to reporter Tom Doudney about what inspired her to set the charity up, her role on Shortland Street and the freak spinal injury she suffered. I heard that you were actually bullied as an adult, is that right? What role did that play in starting Be The Change? Yes, I was but it’s not the driving force behind why I started Be The Change. That driving force was to do with my husband working in a high school, seeing the effect that bullying was having on young people around me, and just really having a desperate need to help them and massive empathy for them. I was thinking ‘that’s hard enough’, and then you have the earthquakes to deal with as well, and we need something in New Zealand to empower young people to stand up to bullying. Yeah, I was bullied in the workplace but I didn’t know it at the time, so I guess it would have been good to have tools and tips to know that, actually, that’s not okay.

Can you tell me more about your background before starting Be The Change? My background is really in the speaking side of it. When I do the workshops and presentations, that comes from an acting background that I have. I have been on Shortland Street and other things when I was younger, so that has drawn me to being able to present to young people and fit in. When were you on Shortland Street? I was on in 2010. My husband [Shaun Edwards-Brown] was actually on for a whole year during 2009 and 2010 as well. He was a pivotal character and I got a twomonth contract as well, which was really awesome. What character did you play? Her name was Jewel Fitzpatrick. What was Jewel like?

TAKING A STAND: Vicki Edwards-Brown started Be The Change, a charity that aims to tackle bullying. She was actually an actress. I was acting, playing an actress. Who did your husband play on Shortland Street? He was Ben Goodall – a para-

medic. How did your tenure end at Shortland Street? Did your character get killed off or anything like that?

No, some main characters did a play and I was in that play, so the play just ran its course and that was it. Did being on Shortland Street open up any more doors for you in terms of acting? Yeah, we lived in Auckland for six months and did some ads and things like that. Then we came back to Christchurch. I had major back surgery and then, being stuck in bed for six weeks while watching TV, I saw something which inspired me to create Be The Change. What was it you saw on TV? It was a programme about a bully prevention charity in America called Challenge Day and I saw that and just thought ‘wow, that is really awesome’ and it just inspired me to do something because we needed something like that in New Zealand. You mentioned being in some ads, what might we recognise you from? They’re pretty old now – Vector’s fibre to the door was one. I was just like standing at a sink turning the tap on and trying to get water through a straw.

takes a stand against bullying But predominately I used to sing – I’d sing at Twiggers, at Addington Raceway. We used to sing every Friday and Saturday with the band. So a lot of my performing was theatrical with singing in a band and stuff like that. I had my own band called V.I.P. I have also done about 20 shows through Showbiz over the years. What sort of music did you sing with your band? I love 80s. Anything from the 60s right through. It was all Top of the Pops stuff that people like to hear. So, have you stopped playing with bands now? I do stuff with a group called Chant et Danse, a Christchurch entertainment group. You also mentioned that you had major back surgery, what happened there? It was a really freak accident. Eleven years ago, we were driving down Moorhouse Ave and there were high winds and a three-storey high tree broke off in the wind just as we drove past and the tree came through the roof on to my head. Oh my gosh! I’m laughing now but it wasn’t

good at the time, and it literally broke my back. I had two spinal surgeries so I have got a titanium back. Do you feel good as new now? No, I have chronic back pain but I have just learned to live with it and do the best I can through exercise and being healthy and that sort of thing, and having a positive attitude about everything – everything. If you can think of something to be grateful for in life, and literally I think helping other people helps

me. If I can lie in bed at night saying I have helped one person, that makes me happy. What sort of support do victims of bullying need most? Is it really just people being kind to them? That really is a huge part of it, yes. It takes a community to prevent bullying – not just a school, or the person, or the family. Schools are the ones that are often blamed but they really struggle with the resources and it’s people like me who can help

them create positive cultures – and I need funding. Funding would enable me to give more resources and help to more schools in Christchurch. But yeah, just being kind and doing things like, for example, setting up lunchtime events at schools. We held an anonymous appreciation day at Cashmere High School, where we provided kids with cards and they write anonymously nice notes to other people. We delivered 1200 notes to teachers and students that day.

It was such a wonderful experience and just set a positive buzz around the school. How do you think we should view people who bully? Are these bad people or should we pity them, too? I do believe that a bully generally is someone who is doing that because they are being bullied themselves, so I do go the way of feeling sorry for them and empathising with their situation, rather than telling them they’re bad.

Sports and Technology Update Sports Sport is an important part of our school life and students are given many opportunities to participate in the large variety of sports we offer. Mastering the ability to work as a team and being a great sportsperson is a significant part of being a Kirkwood student. A few highlights this term have been the Cross Country, Inter Intermediate School’s Duathlon and the start of our winter sports programme which includes: Netball; Football; Rugby; Hockey; Table Tennis; and Squash. As well as these we participate in Athletics, Swimming, Water Polo and Basketball.

Having a clean windscreen inside and out is important, it only takes a little misting to make it next to impossible to see the road and your surroundings, a dirty windscreen is much slower to clear. an often overlooked safety feature; windscreen wipers play an essential role when it is raining

Heading for the slopes? MakE surE you carry snow chains and know how to fit them correctly. Chains must be compatible with the road wheel, there are no ‘one chain fits all’ options. Make sure the chains are fitted to the driving wheels, for example a front wheel drive car means chains to the front. once fitted keep your speed under 30kmph. don’t be one of those people who drive with their head sticking out of the window because the windscreen is frosted up. keep the car warm and the windows clear. and keep an ice scraper in the car. use your highest gear when travelling uphill and your lowest downhill. drive at a safe travelling distance because it takes longer to stop on slippery roads. When travelling in fog, rain or snow, drive with your lights dipped for increased safety. avoid sudden braking, drive slowly, avoid sudden direction changes, leave large following distances, look for shiny, “wet” patches on the road they are most likely black ice.

Pack a survival kit. Include spare warm clothing, blankets, towels, first aid kit and food & water. Jumper leads, tow rope. a bag of sand or kitty litter to help with traction, and a shovel, a flashlight with spare batteries and a waterproof sheet.

Charity Run On Monday the 16th of May the Year 13 Sports Leadership class completed a charity run to Akaroa. The class chose to undertake the task of running to Akaroa in order to raise funds for New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation and The Prostate Cancer Foundation. The class planned numerous fundraising activities such as a pizza night and sausage sizzles as well as approaching individual members of the community for individual sponsorship. The run itself started at 6:30am and the class reached Akaroa at 4:30pm. The students all together ran 469kms averaging half a marathon each. Some of the organised fundraising is yet to be completed but so far they have raised over $2000. By the end of term 2 they hope to hit a grand tally close to $5000.

By Gordon Findlater CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ High School could go to the top of the Thompson Trophy standings with a win over Cashmere High School tonight. Boys’ High come into tonight’s basketball game occupying third spot in the competition, behind Cashmere and Burnside High schools. The team has no shortage of talent with three under-19 and two under-17 Canterbury representative players in their line-up. The only blip in the season to date was a 76-85 loss to Burnside a fortnight ago. “We sort of dragged the chain in that game a wee bit. We finished well and got it back to three points with a few minutes to go, but just couldn’t quite seal the deal. It was a good game to be part of though,” said CBHS coach Glenn Lang. One of the driving forces behind CBHS’s success has been Jack Ansell. The forward is a consistent source of points, averaging around 20 points per game.

Ansell has also been productive on the boards. He leads the league with 70 re-bounds, 30 of which have been offensive. CBHS will also be looking to have the services of highlytouted Canterbury Rams guard Quinn Clinton back for tonight’s match. Clinton returned from Asia last week after attending a coaching programme in China, which saw him test his skills against the best young players from throughout Asia. The event was also attended by top coaches from around the world, as well as current and former NBA players. Tonight’s opposition will provide plenty of challenges. Last year’s runner-up, Cashmere, are currently undefeated in the competition. “They just have an all-round solid team, they go pretty deep. They have a stand-out guard, Connor McLaughlin,” Lang said. McLaughlin is one of the competition’s top scorers and currently sits second in total assists. Burnside High School currently find themselves second in the premier first XI competition, with six wins and one loss. Tomorrow, they face third-place Cashmere High School, who sit just two competition points behind them. Burnside will go into tomorrow’s game with no shortage of confidence. Last week they were too strong for fifth placed St Andrew’s College, win-

ning 2-0. “We went two goals ahead but you can never write off St Andrew’s. “In the second half, we had 80-90 per cent of possession and figured, if they didn’t have the ball, they couldn’t come back,” Burnside manager David Williams said. Putting the ball in the back of the net hasn’t been as issue for Burnside this season. They have scored over 40 goals this season. However, Cashmere has the second-best defensive record in the competition, allowing in just seven goals in as many games. Top scorers Conor

Clarke and Reza Ahmadi have led the line well for Burnside this year. The team will also soon have the services of fellow striker and New Zealand under-17 squad member Byron Heath, who is returning from a broken arm. For Burnside, a top three finish and qualification for the national secondary school championship is also a priority. “ The standard has definitely raised. The Auckland teams play a more aggressive brand of football,” Williams said. Tomorrow’s match will screen live on CTV. Kickoff is at 3.20pm.
